Black Girl
Environmentalist
Black Girl Environmentalist is a national organization dedicated to improving pathways and retention in the climate movement for Black girls, women, and gender-expansive people. Founder Wawa Gatheru envisioned a retro, inviting brand rooted in the strength and creativity of Black women.
The identity draws from 1970s aesthetics—particularly the iconic silhouette of the afro, symbolizing boldness and self-defined beauty. The logo uses Gaston Opti, selected for its soft, rounded curves that echo this form. To capture the expressive energy of 70s poster culture, I built a complementary typographic system using five supporting typefaces.
A bold, warm color palette reflects joy and empowerment, while patterns inspired by 70s women’s fashion add rhythm and texture throughout the visual system.
